A Brief Family History

Flag of France

All of my French-Canadian ancestors came from various regions in France in the 1600's.They sailed on large boats and the journey took as long as two to three months depending on the weather. They settled in "New France" which is now called Quebec, Canada. Life wasn't very easy for them. They cleared the land to build their houses and plant crops to supply them with food to get them through their first winter. They also had to protect their families from the Iroquois Indians who raided the villiages and sometimes took people as hostages or killed them on the spot.
My ancestors migrated across Quebec to Ontario and ended up in Tupper Lake, Franklin County, New York where my Grandmother Rosalie was born and also my Mother Rita was born. In 1929 after my Great Grandmother died, my Grandmother who was a widow at the time took all 4 of her children and drove to California. I bet that was fun with 4 kids!

In the 1910 US Census report I found Telesphore Laliberte and family living on Wawbeek Rd in Tupper Lake, NY. According to the information, he way 58 at the time and had been in the US for 30 years. He migrated in 1868 to Tupper Lake and worked at the local saw mill as a Cantahook operator. Josephine was 53 at the time and had migrated in 1880. So he had been in the US before he married Josephine on September 15, 1879 at St. Joseph, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Now 5 of their 8 children were born in Canada between the years of 1881 and 1887. Out of the 8 there were 6 living. So did Josephine go home to Plantagenet, Prescott, Ontario, Canada to have her children? I have found baptisim records for all of the children except for Eva who was born in March 1881.

I have added a link below to a map of France. I found a map of France here on the internet that shows alot of the towns that our ancestors came from. The map is from the era of 1453! Most of them came from La Rochelle, Rouen, Normandie, France.
